of Norma.

Norma Rubovits is a Chicago treasure. This exhibition pays tribute to her enormous creativity across forty years in two related fields, fine binding and paper marbling. In each discipline she took the traditional craft and transformed it into original, imaginative art. View nineteen bindings she made and sixty sheets of her own marbled paper—just a few fruits of Norma Rubovits’s fantasy and skill as an artist over a long career. The objects on display were chosen from among five thousand items that make up the Norma B. Rubovits collection at the Newberry Library, donated by her since 1991.

Since its invention in Japan and Central Asia in the tenth century and its later adoption by the Turks, the decorative paper technique known as marbling (ebru in Turkish) has been transformed and reinvented by practitioners in many countries. Marbling’s popularity as a decorative paper technique has waxed and waned over the last centuries, even as new materials have become available and production methods invented. Today it holds a comfortable place in the world of decorative art and craft. Join us for a presentation highlighting the rich history of marbled paper and how it remains a vital element of book and paper arts. Steve Pittelkow will also demonstrate several familiar patterns and a few unusual ones, too.
Steve Pittelkow is a bookbinder and paper marbler in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Steve’s papers appear in museum collections and are used by binders and book artists.

- Galleries are open Monday, Friday, Saturday from 8:15 am - 5:00 pm, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 8:15 am - 7:30 pm. We also have holiday closings.
