This is the first work dedicated entirely to this technique that is published in Castilian. The principal characteristic of marbling, its essence, is the fact that it uses the surface of a liquid to make the painting, being this way a transference procedure. The book reports the history and vicissitudes of this almost millennial and unknown method, from its birth in Japan, its flowering in Asia and its massive employment in the European binding from the XVIIth century. But in the practical aspect, also it deals with a precise enumeration of the necessary elements for his practice that, together with a catalog of 75 models both traditional and modern, and the description of the "route" to obtain them, it will allow developing it to who feel called to it. Marbling served at first to provide backgrounds to the calligrapher and it was used later principally in bookbinding, although already in the 18th century, in Turkey, they were made works whose only justification was that of being contemplated.

ANTONIO VÉLEZ CELEMÍN was born in Madrid in 1959. He is a lawyer and businessman, eager reader and a binding fan since his 18 years, from which came his interest in decorated papers. From 2004 he devotes himself to the marbling technique, so much in its practical and commercial side as in its researcher and spreading one. He has published some articles in specializing magazines and in collective works and he has collaborated in a monograph with the study and classification of the decorated papers that adorn the volumes of the Toledo Cathedral library. He is an external teacher of the faculty of Library Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid, where he gives diverse courses on the traditional techniques of paper decoration, and he has collaborated with the Town hall of Madrid, the Business Foundation of the University of Granada and with other private schools and bookbinding societies, both national and foreign ones, developing the same work. It has taken part in several collective exhibitions and congresses. His works are in some museums and collections of Europe and of the United States.
